“Closing Rideau High School will hurt our community” - Emilie Taman
Ottawa-Carleton District School Board disregards the needs of Ottawa-Vanier

OTTAWA (March 7, 2017) - Emilie Taman, NDP candidate for the federal Ottawa-Vanier by-election coming up April 3rd, is disappointed by the decision of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board to close Rideau High School at its meeting last night.
“Rideau High School is an institution that serves the different needs of our community, particularly those of new immigrants moving to the riding and Indigenous people” said Taman. “This is where a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work, and moving all of these students in a bigger school will mean the end of this personalized approach. This means that closing Rideau High will hurt our community.”
Other avenues could have been explored by OCDSB to increase the use of the school and keep it open. “The school board should have looked at all the options available to increase the capacity at Rideau before deciding to close it. This is another shortsighted decision from elected officials that didn’t listen to what our community needs. That why we need to elect people that will work with Ottawa-Vanier residents to make their voices heard,” concluded Taman.
